PTCA

Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty is a minimally invasive technique designed to alleviate blockages in coronary arteries, thereby enhancing blood circulation to the cardiac muscle. In this procedure, a slender tube known as a catheter is inserted into a blood vessel and navigated to the obstructed coronary artery.

At the tip of the catheter is a small balloon. Once positioned correctly, the balloon is inflated at the site of the narrowing within the artery, compressing the plaque or thrombus against the arterial walls. This action creates additional space for improved blood flow.

During the procedure, the healthcare professional employs fluoroscopy, a specialised form of X-ray that provides real-time imaging, akin to an X-ray “movie.” This technique enables the provider to identify blockages in the coronary arteries as a contrast dye is introduced and observed moving through the vessels, a process referred to as coronary angiography.
